Well its that time of year again, if your looking to get hooked up and not a lot of work involved. This is the month to do it, you do not have to go far at all to target Spanish Mackerel, Kingfish, Bonita, Grouper and even Flounder, There has been plenty of action on the beach all the way to Clearwater. Watch for birds diving around the bait pods and you will find the fish. If trolling is your thing use a #1 Planner with a small gold or silver spoon, I have been using Clark spoons a 00 or 1. Use about 20-30 ft of 30 Lb mono leader between your spoon and you planner. If you want to use live bait, use a stinger rig set up and slow troll your bait but do not drown them. Trolling to fast will cause the live bait to spin and drown your bait. You want to make you bait look as natural as possible behind your boat. Sometimes the Macs and Kings will get wire shy, so you might have to drop down to a J hook system with 30 Lb mono leader. Your hook up ratio might exceed but be careful of more break offs. Trolling is a really great way to cover some ground for Macs and Kings. The near- shore reefs out to around 6 miles is holding some really good fish as well. I have anchored on a couple of these in the last couple days with some of my clients and had the Macs,Kings and Cobia come to us. Simply setting out a chum bag and setting some baits out on a flat line. One rod with a stinger rig setup and one on a j hook setup. Bottom fishing on these areas are very well this time of year. We have been getting plenty of Key west Grunts, and Flounder and of course the Gag grouper. We have been using a dead and live white bait Don't hesitate to use the small white bait the flounder will eat them up. Tight Lines !!! The bigger red grouper are moving from there deeper feeding grounds to the 80 to 100 foot depths. Fish up to twenty pounds have been caught on role offs and swiss cheese bottom using squid and jig combo and live pin fish. The gag grouper have been caught at the same depth on the bigger ledges using cut sardines, pig fish and pin fish. Mixed in with the gags have been nice mangrove snapper Remember to use live white bait and chum chum chum. Spanish macs and Bonita are found busting on the bait pods all over the area beaches. Position your boat up wind and cast small jigs and spoons to them. You will be sure to hook up.
